Wind River Range Area Conditions Update

June 18,2013

Here is a little bit of a Wind River Area conditions update. Here at Wild Iris, we try to have valid and useful information for you to use to plan your trips into the Winds. As we hear from parties coming out of the Winds, we will relate pertinent information here on our site. If you have anything information you would like to share with us, give us a call, 307-332-4541, or email us, wildiris@wildirisclimbing.com

Wind River Range Area Conditions Update - Shoshone Lake Road

From Emily and Maggie's run on June 5th, 2013. Shoshone Lake Road was more like a waterway than a road. Large drifts still present, but surely melted out now, two weeks later.

View from from Cyclone pass too.

An estimate of snow line is about 10,500 feet as of 6/18/13.

Cirque of the Towers- within the last week a party attempted to get into the cirque, but snow on Jack Ass Pass was still too much. It has been reported that another party may have gone in over this past Father's Day weekend, and we may hear a report from them later this week.

Middle Fork Update 6-10-13

Snow update: There are large drifts on the final approach to Pinto Park, but its not hard to get around them. The park itself is snowless. About a quarter mile below the Deep Creek Lakes there is a big ol' pile of snow pack that is not comfortably passable by foot. Maybe next time I'll come into the shop and have that nice fellow BJ help me pick out gaiters.

"Middle Fork update as of 5/25. No snow to 3 forks park but a bit muddy. Pinto Park Lake is still frozen and alot of faceted snow in the trees, bring your snow shoes. Yuck! Hiking out today was pretty warm so melting fast."

Wild Iris Climbing Area - May 2013

Aspen-Glade-Rainbow-Oct-2012.jpg

wildirisClimbing at Wild Iris is doable. Main parking isn't quite accessible, but Aspen Glade parking is accessible. Once it is possible to get to the OK Corral road, be wary of muddy conditions, potholes and the impact your driving on it may have. Expect snow drifts in the trees on the trails into the Five Ten wall or Cowboy Poetry wall. If you walk up to Rising from the Plains, then you can come in along the wall and avoid the ice crystal snow drift crossings. Remember, the weather at 9000 feet can change very quickly, so carry the necessary gear with you and be prepared. The most current guidebook is Steve Bechtel's Lander Rock Climb 2011 and is available here on this site, or in our shop at 166 Main Street in Lander. We mail order by phone as well, 307-332-4541.

Emily shared, "...here are some pictures from my run this weekend up the Middle Fork. We were able to travel without too much snowpack to about ½ mile past the Shoshone Trail intersection on the Middle Fork." windriverpeak051113
